Life.....In 3/4 Time

  • Nelson Music Room, Duke University East Campus (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Many circumstances colluded to make my annual Cabaret for Valentine's Day impossible to schedule this year.  So we've moved it to St. Patrick's Day!  Please join me, pianist Glenn Mehrbach, and bassist Robbie Link as we present a concert of songs which all celebrate the lilt of waltz time.  Berlin, Brubeck, Bachrach, Sondheim, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, and the Broadway waltz king Richard Rodgers will all have their moment to shine.

Once scorned as "the dance that breaks the bond of good breeding", the waltz captivates with its provocative, hypnotic sway.  Our program of songs from the ribald to the romantic, the exciting to the indecent, will have you dancing all the way home!

Tickets are $20 and can be obtained in advance by going to: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2890219

Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the concert.

Nelson Music Room is on the 2nd floor of the East Duke Building, and is elevator accessible via the breezeway from the building directly next door.  Duke is on spring break that week, so parking isn't a problem!

"Live Jazz Now!" on WHUP-FM

My good friend Ben Palmer is a well known musician in the Triangle, playing many gigs on upright bass, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar.  Now he's a media mogul too, as host of a weekly show on Hillsborough's WHUP-FM 104.7.  Every Thursday from 1-4 PM he presents "Live Jazz Now!", which features him in performance and in conversation with the area's best musicians.  Pianist Glenn Mehrbach and I will be his guests on Thursday June 2nd.  We'll talk about our decade-long collaboration, the music we love, the music we've composed, and of course we'll be swinging with Ben and performing some great standards.  Do tune in!

If you can't listen live, you can stream the broadcast on your computer, and it's available in the WHUP archives after the broadcast is over.  Just go to whupfm.org/show/live-jazz-now/ to listen.

I'd love to know if you have any favorites you'd like to hear while we're "on air".  Just drop me a line at info@ellenciompi.com with your request!
